Milestones

Moments that shaped the Earth Harp

A selection of milestones. The full lists of venues, festivals and partners follow below.

  1. Around 2000

    The first Earth Harp

William strings almost 1,000 feet across a valley, turning the landscape into a harp.

  2. Early years

    The Field Museum, Chicago

The first public installation of the Earth Harp, followed by the Exploratorium in San Francisco.

  3. 2012

    America’s Got Talent

Third place on NBC’s Season 7, from more than ten thousand acts. William returned in 2015 for a duet with finalist Emily West, the first time two former contestants collaborated on the show.

  4. Guinness World Record

    Singapore skyscraper

The strings run about 300 meters from the plaza stage to the top of a tower: the longest playable stringed instrument on earth. It launches the Sky Scraper Tour.

  5. 2015

    Sonic Odyssey

A production show built around William’s instruments for Royal Caribbean’s flagship, Quantum of the Seas.

  6. 2016

    Kennedy Center residency

Two Earth Harps in the Hall of States, daily concerts, workshops and a sold-out finale in the Eisenhower Theater. The same year, David Satori of Beats Antique joins the set at Lightning in a Bottle.

  7. 2023

Houston and Lightning in a Bottle

The Miller Outdoor Theatre centennial in Houston, and a return to Lightning in a Bottle.

  8. 2026

    ArtPrize opening night

About 250 feet of strings across the Pearl Street Bridge in Grand Rapids, with thousands of people staying through the rain.
